Sustainable Rural Livelihoods

The Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a unique effort dedicated to providing leadership and support that alleviate hunger and poverty in developing countries.

Since 2004, collaboration among faculty from five colleges at Iowa State and Ugandan partner institutions has resulted in increased food security and incomes for small famers in Kamuli district, Uganda. This unique collaboration has empowered more than 7,000 people in 800 households in Uganda — improving the quality of life in ways that can be sustained over the long term.

The CRSL was established in 2003 with gifts from Gerald A. (’62 agricultural business) and Karen A. Kolschowsky of Oak Park, Ill.

College of Business Doctorate Program

Iowa State’s College of Business will launch its first ever doctorate program this fall, and a recent gift by Russell and Ann Gerdin of Iowa City, Iowa, will support that venture. The Gerdins have contributed $1 million to an endowment fund to support the Business and Technology Ph.D. program.

The full-time residential program will focus on theory development and testing in areas relating to the management of three critical resources of any organization — management of a firm’s customers, supply chain and information infrastructure.

Engineering Policy and Leadership Institute

The Engineering Policy and Leadership Institute in the College of Engineering focuses on increasing both the engagement of engineers in state and national policy making as well as the number of engineers in elected positions. The institute consists of three main components: the Engineering Leadership Program, the Engineering Faculty Fellowship Program and the EPLI Thematic Year.

The ELP integrates academics with experiential learning and a community orientation to develop the leadership potential of students in the College of Engineering. ELP provides a comprehensive approach to engineering leadership, focusing not only on academic performance, but also on specific skills and engagement with communities beyond the classroom.
